2018 World Cup: Two goals from Edinson Cavani silence Portugal in the round of 16

Uruguay looked so mighty when they beat Portugal 2-1 in the last 16 of the 2018 World Cup. Edinson Cavani bought up two La Celeste winning goals, while the Selecao replied once via Pepe's header.

Oscar Tabarez's team, immediately showed an offensive game since the referee blew the whistle signaling the start of the match. Uruguay immediately took the lead when the game had only been running for seven minutes.

Cavani gave a long pass to Luis Suarez and the former PSG spearhead continued to run towards the Portugal goal. He then welcomed the feedback from Suarez to score the first goal for La Celeste.

Then Portugal pulled back through Pepe's header in the 55th minute. But 10 minutes later, Cavani scored his second goal in the 62nd minute in a beautiful way with a shot at the far post that Patricio couldn't reach.

Unfortunately in the 74th minute, Cavani suffered an injury so he had to be pulled off the field by Uruguay coach, Oscar Tabarez.

Got Disaster

In the 74th minute it appeared Cavani was not very comfortable with his feet and winced in pain in the middle of the field. The bomber, who is now strengthening for Valencia, was immediately sentenced to suffer a hamstring injury after a post-match examination.

Cavani seems to feel the injury is so painful. However, he is optimistic that he can fight with his team-mates to take Uruguay even further.

"I just felt something at one point, and couldn't recover. I will do everything to make sure I can get on the pitch," added Cavani.

Three Goals Collection

Edinson Cavani recorded three goals in the 2018 World Cup. His role in the Uruguay squad was so important that it allowed his teammates to advance to the last 8 round.

Cavani scored his first goal as Uruguay beat Russia 3-0 in the third matchday of Group A of the 2018 World Cup. Then, the striker nicknamed El Matador scored all of La Celeste's goals as they beat Portugal 2-1.

Thanks to that record, Cavani became Uruguay's most fertile player in the 2018 World Cup, beating his compatriot Luis Suarez who only scored one goal.
