His contract at Madrid is left until the summer of 2023 only. There have been efforts to negotiate to extend the contract from both parties but there has been no agreement.
Asensio targeted by Barcelona
The situation then led to a lot of speculation about the future of Marco Asensio. He has been linked with a number of clubs since last season.
One of them is Barcelona. This news is obviously horrendous considering the fierce rivalry between the two clubs.
Reportedly Barcelona will try to accommodate Asensio in the summer of 2023. They are after him because they think the Spanish midfielder is suitable to fill the post that will be left by Memphis Depay.
Depay's contract at Barcelona also expires in the summer of 2023. The Dutchman has also been linked with a number of clubs since last season.
Asensio Response
Marco Asensio was then asked if if he were to leave Real Madrid, he would move to Barcelona. Asensio then hinted that he did not close the opportunity to move closer to the Camp Nou after leaving the Santiago Bernabeu.
"I honestly don't know. Like Barca, a lot of [gossip] comes out," Asensio told Cope.
"I'm focused on the moment and giving everything with the national team and with my club. I haven't taken it into account and haven't thought about it. I can't give you an answer," he admitted.
Reasonable
Marco Asensio later said that the rumors circulating about him were of course normal, especially since his contract was about to expire. He also believes that mid-season there will be more horrendous rumors regarding his future.
"This morning I got 200 messages. I am in a world where there are a lot of rumours," Asensio said."That's normal because in January I can sign for any club and more [gossip] will come out. We are in a circle that I cannot control."
