Portugal Determined To Get Victory In The Last Match Against Spain

49erssports.com - Portugal only needs a draw to qualify for the 2022 UEFA Nations League semifinals as Group A2 representatives. However, Portugal is very anti to play for a draw.

Portugal is determined to get a win in the final match against Spain. The match will take place at the Estadio Municipal de Braga, Portugal, Wednesday (28/9/2022) early morning WIB.

Currently, Portugal comfortably sits at the top of the standings with a collection of ten points. Spain is exactly one strip below by collecting eight points.

From simple calculations, Portugal only needs to get a draw to qualify. However, Portugal manager Fernando Santos did not want to play just for a draw.

Focus on Victory

Santos explained that the mentality of the players was conditioned to win. Not just qualifying for the last four of the UEFA Nations League.

"We just have to focus on winning rather than reaching the top four," he said.

"I want the players to face Spain based on their achievements, as they do to all opponents. Do that and we will always be closer to achieving the goals we want.”

Chance to Repeat Success

Portugal coach Fernando Santos says his team will not be satisfied with the draw they need to reach the UEFA Nations League final when they host Spain.

Portugal, who won the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2019, climbed to the top of Group A2 on Saturday with a 4-0 win over the Czech Republic. At the same time, Spain lost at home to Switzerland.

The victory later is also important for Portugal to measure their strength ahead of the inaugural match of the 2022 World Cup in Group H. Portugal will face Ghana on November 24, 2022.

Players in Fit

Antos have a nearly fully fit squad to choose from, with Atletico Madrid forward Joao Felix having returned to training after missing last weekend's game.

Veteran centre-back Pepe is the only player to be sidelined initially through injury.
